Value Betting Guide
Understanding Value Bets
A value bet is a bet made with a hand you believe is currently the best, with the goal of getting called by a worse hand. Value betting is the primary way winning poker players generate profit. The key question to ask yourself is: what worse hands can my opponent call with?
If you can identify several hands in your opponents range that are worse than yours but likely to call, you have a clear value bet.
Sizing Your Value Bets
The optimal value bet size depends on your opponents tendencies and the board texture. Against calling stations, bet larger because they will call with a wide range regardless. Against tight players, smaller bets may extract more value as they are more likely to call.
On dry boards, smaller bets work well. On wet, coordinated boards, larger bets protect your hand and charge draws appropriately.
Thin Value Betting
Thin value betting is the art of extracting value with hands that are only slightly ahead of your opponents calling range. This is one of the key skills that separates good players from great ones. A thin value bet might be betting top pair with a mediocre kicker on the river, expecting to be called by second pair or ace high.
The risk is that you occasionally get raised, but the long-term profit outweighs this.
Value Betting on Different Streets
Your value betting strategy should evolve as the hand progresses. On The Flop, you might bet a wide range of hands for value. By the turn, your value range should narrow to hands that can withstand a call.
On the river, only bet for value with hands you are confident are ahead of your opponents calling range. Many players lose money by value betting too thinly on later streets.
Common Value Betting Mistakes
The biggest mistake is failing to value bet when you should, leaving money on the table. Another common error is betting too small with strong hands, not extracting maximum value. Some players also make the mistake of turning made hands into bluffs by betting and then folding to a raise.
Trust your hand reading and bet confidently when you believe you have the best hand.
