Understanding Rebuy Tournaments
Rebuy tournaments allow players to purchase additional chips during a designated rebuy period, usually the first one to two hours. This structure changes the game dynamics significantly compared to freezeout tournaments. Players tend to be more aggressive during the rebuy period because busting is not a disaster, you simply rebuy.
Understanding how to exploit this dynamic is key to success in rebuy events.
Optimal Rebuy Strategy
The most effective approach in rebuy tournaments depends on your bankroll and skill level. Aggressive players may choose to play loosely during the rebuy period, willing to gamble for a large stack. Conservative players might play tight and let aggressive opponents bust and rebuy, entering the post-rebuy phase with a healthy stack and fewer chips invested.
Both approaches can be profitable when executed correctly.
When to Take the Rebuy
Always start with the add-on if available at the beginning. If you bust during the rebuy period, immediately rebuy if you believe your skill edge justifies the investment. Consider the tournament value: in higher buy-in events, a single rebuy is a small additional investment for the potential return.
In low buy-in events with unlimited rebuys, set a strict limit on how many rebuys you will take.
The Add-On Decision
The add-on is an optional chip purchase available at the end of the rebuy period, usually regardless of your current stack. In most cases, taking the add-on is correct because the chips-per-pound value is typically better than the initial buy-in. The exception might be when you already have a massive stack and the add-on represents a tiny percentage increase.
As a general rule, always take the add-on.
Post-Rebuy Period Adjustments
Once the rebuy period ends, the tournament becomes a freezeout. This transition requires a significant strategy adjustment. Tighten up your ranges as players can no longer rebuy and begin playing more carefully.
The loose, aggressive players who accumulated chips during the rebuy period may struggle to adjust. Exploit their continued aggression by calling them down with stronger hands.
