Poker Chip Values
Standard Chip Colours
In most casinos and home games, poker chips follow a standard colour-coding system. White chips are typically worth the minimum denomination, often 1. Red chips represent 5, blue chips 10, green chips 25, and black chips 100.
Higher denominations include purple (500), orange (1,000), and grey (5,000). This standardisation allows players to quickly assess pot sizes and stack depths at a glance.
Setting Up a Home Game
For a typical home game with blinds of 1/2, each player should start with 100-200 big blinds worth of chips. A good starting stack might be 200 in chips: 20 white (1), 20 red (5), and 5 green (25). For a tournament, each player might receive 10,000 in tournament chips.
Having enough denominations ensures smooth betting and making change throughout the game.
Tournament Chip Structures
Tournament chips have no cash value and are used solely to track each players standing. Starting stacks typically range from 5,000 to 100,000 chips depending on the tournament structure. As blinds increase, smaller denomination chips are coloured up, meaning they are exchanged for higher denomination chips to simplify play.
The number of chips does not equal the buy-in amount.
Chip Counting and Stack Management
Keep your chips in neat stacks of 20, making it easy for opponents and the dealer to estimate your stack size. Place higher denomination chips in front so they are visible. In tournament play, hiding large denomination chips behind smaller ones is considered angle shooting and is against the rules.
Being transparent about your stack size is both a rule and good Etiquette.
Custom and Speciality Chips
Many home game enthusiasts invest in custom poker chips made from clay composite or ceramic materials. These chips have a better feel and sound compared to basic plastic chips. Quality chips typically weigh between 10-14 grams and feature edge spots for denomination identification.
Custom chips can include personalised designs, making them popular gifts and collectible items.
