What Are Poker Blinds?
Blinds are forced bets posted by players to the left of the Dealer Button before any cards are dealt. The Small Blind is typically half the big blind. These mandatory bets create action and ensure there is always something to play for in every hand.
Without blinds, players could simply fold every hand until they receive premium cards, making the game extremely slow and unexciting.
Small Blind vs Big Blind
The small blind is posted by the player immediately to the left of the dealer button and is usually half the size of the big blind. The big blind, posted by the next player to the left, sets the minimum bet for the hand. In a typical game with blinds of 1/2, the small blind posts 1 and the big blind posts 2.
The big blind has a positional disadvantage Pre-Flop but gets to act last before The Flop.
Blind Structure in Tournaments
Tournament blinds increase at regular intervals, forcing players to accumulate chips or risk being blinded out. Early levels feature small blinds relative to stack sizes, allowing for deep-stacked play. As blinds increase, the pressure mounts and players must adjust their strategy accordingly.
Understanding blind levels helps you plan when to tighten up and when to become more aggressive.
Defending Your Blinds
Blind defence is a critical concept in modern poker. When you are in the big blind, you have already invested money in the pot, giving you better Pot Odds to call raises. However, you will be out of position for the rest of the hand.
Good blind defence requires understanding which hands play well from out of position and recognising when opponents are stealing with weak hands.
Antes and Straddles
Some games include antes, small forced bets from every player, in addition to blinds. Antes increase the pot size pre-flop and encourage more action. A straddle is a voluntary blind bet, usually double the big blind, placed by the player under the gun before cards are dealt.
Straddles effectively increase the stakes and create larger pots, changing the dynamics of the game significantly.
