What Are Mixed Games?
Mixed games rotate between different poker variants at regular intervals. The most common mixed game is HORSE, which cycles through Holdem, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Stud, and Stud Eight-or-Better. Other popular mixes include 8-Game and 10-Game.
Mixed games test a players versatility across multiple formats and reward those who have studied all variants rather than specialising in just one.
The Advantage of Mixed Game Proficiency
Most poker players specialise in one variant, usually No-Limit Holdem. In mixed games, you face opponents who may be experts in one or two games but weak in others. Your edge comes from being competent across all games while identifying and exploiting opponents weaknesses in their less familiar variants.
Even moderate proficiency in a game where opponents are clueless provides significant expected value.
HORSE Strategy Overview
In HORSE, adjust your strategy for each game. Holdem rewards aggressive play with good hand selection. Omaha Hi-Lo requires patience and nut-hunting with strong low draws.
Razz demands careful attention to up-cards and ante stealing. Stud combines memory skills with positional awareness. Stud Eight-or-Better requires balancing high and low hand potential.

Adapting Between Game Types
The mental switch between variants is the biggest challenge in mixed games. When transitioning from Holdem to Stud, you must shift from thinking about community cards to tracking individual up-cards. Moving from high-only games to split-pot games requires a completely different hand evaluation framework.

Building a Mixed Game Foundation
Start by learning the basic rules and strategy of each variant individually. Play low-stakes single-variant games to build experience. Then combine them in mixed game format.
Focus extra study time on your weakest games, as improving your worst game provides the biggest overall gain. Online mixed game tables at micro-stakes are an excellent learning environment with low financial risk.
