What Are Implied Odds?
Implied odds extend the concept of Pot Odds by considering the additional money you expect to win on future streets if you hit your draw. While pot odds only consider the current pot size, implied odds factor in the potential future bets. This concept is crucial for drawing hands because it can justify calling bets that direct pot odds alone would not support.
Calculating Implied Odds
To calculate implied odds, estimate how much more you expect to win if you complete your draw. Add this amount to the current pot to determine your effective pot. Then compare this effective pot to the cost of calling.
For example, if the pot is 50, it costs 20 to call, and you expect to win an additional 80 on later streets, your effective pot is 130 to 20, giving you 6.5-to-1 implied odds.
Factors Affecting Implied Odds
Several factors influence your implied odds. Deep stacks provide better implied odds because more money can be won on later streets. The visibility of your draw matters, as hidden draws like sets have better implied odds than obvious flush draws.
Your opponents tendencies are crucial: calling stations provide excellent implied odds, while observant players who can fold to your bets reduce your implied odds significantly.
Reverse Implied Odds
Reverse implied odds represent the additional money you might lose when you make your hand but it is second best. For example, completing a non-nut flush can be costly if your opponent holds a higher flush. Hands vulnerable to reverse implied odds include low flush draws, bottom end of straight draws, and weak two-pair hands.
Recognising reverse implied odds prevents costly mistakes.
Using Implied Odds in Practice
In practice, implied odds justify calling with set-mining hands like small Pocket Pairs, speculative Suited Connectors in position, and strong combo draws. When deciding whether to call, ask yourself: if I hit my hand, how much more can I realistically win? Be honest in this assessment, as overestimating implied odds is a common leak among recreational players.
