ICM Strategy Guide
What Is ICM?
The Independent Chip Model, or ICM, is a mathematical model used in tournament poker to convert chip stacks into real money equity. Unlike Cash Games where each chip has a fixed dollar value, tournament chips have a non-linear value: the first chips you win are worth more than subsequent chips because eliminating a player guarantees you move up in payouts. ICM fundamentally changes optimal strategy in tournaments.
How ICM Affects Strategy
ICM creates situations where the correct play differs from chip-optimal strategy. Near the money bubble or at a final table, preserving your stack becomes more important than accumulating chips. A medium stack might avoid marginal spots that a chip leader should take.
Short Stacks gain leverage because eliminating them costs other players potential prize money. These dynamics create unique strategic considerations.
Bubble Play and ICM
The bubble, the point just before all remaining players finish in the money, is where ICM pressure is most intense. Players with medium stacks should tighten up significantly because busting just before the money is catastrophic for their expected value. Short stacks can exploit this by going all-in more freely, as medium stacks are forced to fold hands they would normally play.
The chip leader should apply pressure to medium stacks.
Final Table ICM Considerations
At a final table, each elimination represents a significant pay jump. ICM considerations intensify, and your strategy should account for the prize structure. With large pay jumps between places, survival becomes more valuable.
Consider stack sizes relative to the blinds, the pay jumps remaining, and each players risk tolerance. Software tools can calculate ICM ranges for common final table scenarios.
ICM Calculators and Tools
Several software tools calculate ICM equity and optimal ranges for tournament situations. These tools input the prize structure, remaining players, and stack sizes to determine each players dollar equity. Popular ICM calculators include ICMIZER, HoldemResources Calculator, and various equity calculator apps.
Studying ICM scenarios away from the table helps develop intuition for tournament decisions.
