Understanding Bounty Tournaments
Bounty tournaments, also called knockout tournaments, place a cash prize on each players head. When you eliminate a player, you win their bounty immediately. In standard bounty tournaments, half the buy-in goes to the prize pool and half to bounties.
Progressive knockout tournaments increase the bounty value as you accumulate more eliminations, making each successive knockout more valuable.
How Bounties Change Strategy
The bounty creates additional incentive to eliminate players, which widens your calling range when you cover an opponent. If a short-stacked opponents bounty is significant relative to the pot, you can profitably call with a wider range than normal. This mathematical adjustment is the key to bounty tournament success.
Always factor the bounty value into your Pot Odds calculations.
Calculating Bounty-Adjusted Odds
When facing an all-in from a shorter stack, add their bounty value to the pot before calculating your odds. For example, in a 10 bounty tournament, if the pot is 1,000 and a player goes all-in for 500, the pot is effectively 1,500 plus the 10 bounty, giving you much better calling odds. This adjustment means you should call significantly wider than in a non-bounty tournament.
Protecting Your Own Bounty
While pursuing bounties is important, protecting your own stack remains the priority. Do not make reckless calls just because there is a bounty at stake. Your own tournament equity is worth more than a single bounty in most situations.
Balance bounty hunting with solid tournament fundamentals, and avoid getting stacked chasing bounties with marginal hands.
Progressive Knockout Strategy
In progressive knockout tournaments, your bounty grows with each elimination, making you a bigger target. When you have accumulated a large bounty, opponents have extra incentive to challenge you. Adjust by playing tighter in marginal spots and letting your growing bounty create Fold Equity when you do bet.
The most profitable strategy is to accumulate bounties early when they are smaller, building a large progressive bounty for late-game leverage.
